What
is Midwifery Care?
|
The
word midwife actually means "with woman". The philosophy
of care at Beach Cities Midwifery and Women's Health Care embraces
the belief that every woman deserves personalized, quality, and satisfying
health care. This is accomplished in a variety of ways. Your visits
to our office are designed to allow adequate time for you to discuss
health concerns, address problems, and participate in developing a
plan of care that is tailored to your individual needs. |

Care and Childbirth |
The
months preceding conception are important and allow a woman to prepare
herself physically and emotionally for a healthy pregnancy. This is
a great time to get to know the midwives at Beach Cities Midwifery
and Women's Health Care. They can assist you in making sure you are
at your best prior to becoming pregnant. Evidence shows that taking
a folic acid supplement in the months preceding pregnancy prevents
certain birth defects such as Spina Bifida. Achieving your ideal weight
and establishing an exercise program will also get you off to a great
start.
|
One
of the most important times in a woman's life! Your initial prenatal
visit will last approximately one hour. During that visit, we will
discuss how to achieve a healthy pregnancy-through lifestyle, diet,
exercise, and education. We will thoroughly review your health history
and perform a comprehensive physical examination. Laboratory tests
will be done based on your individual needs. |
| Follow-Up
Prenatal Visits |
Labor
and Birth Care |
| These
visits allow us to get to know one another and develop a close working
relationship. These visits last approximately 30 minutes and allow
ample opportunity to discuss important topics related to your growing
pregnancy. The focus of these visits is to continue to optimize your
health, gain knowledge about the fetus growing within you, and formulate
a birth plan that reflects your personal choices, desires, and needs.
We encourage active participation as we help you to prepare for your
baby's birth. |
One
of the nurse-midwives will be with you during active labor and birth.
We will assist you and your birth partner in working with your labor,
encouraging you through words, massage, positioning, and variety of
other techniques. We will remain with you during the early postpartum
period to ensure that breastfeeding is well established and that your
recovery is progressing normally. The midwife will visit you in the
hospital daily until discharge home. A pediatrician will come to the
hospital each day to see your baby and discuss his/her progress with
you. |
| After-Birth
Care |
|
The early days
at home with a newborn baby can be the most challenging in a young
family's life. The midwives will maintain close contact with you
during this time. We remain available to you for any questions you
have, to assist you with breastfeeding, and support you during this
joyful, yet demanding life transition time.
